Tips For Your Blog
A few things you need to decide:
-How anonymous do you want your blog to be? Will your family and friends appreciate being named in your blog or will you hide their identity? Are you going to make your blog available to said family and friends or do you want to write about what weirdos they are? I advise the latter as it will be difficult to vent about what's on your mind and you'll need to filter the information you share instead of being open and honest and getting it all off your chest.
-We all bitch and complain everyday and most of us live with people who bitch and complain. The last thing I want to do is jump into a blog who’s author spends ALL of their time bitching and complaining. Try to mix it up. It’s ok to have “those days”, we all do. Feel free to blog about them…but if you want people coming back to see you be careful not to get stuck in that rutt.
-Set goals for yourself. How many new blogs do you want to read each day? How many people do you want coming to YOUR blog each day. My personal goal is that each week I want to see a higher number of visitors than I did the week before. It gives me something to look forward too and gives me something to work for.
-Post often. How can people smother you with comment love if you never post? I once had a reader call me out on not leaving her any comment love. When I went to her blog to respond she had the same post up that was up the LAST time I visited her blog. How many times can someone comment on raspberry biscuits? Not many. One in fact. Just one. You don’t have to post every single day, but if you’re like Alecia, who is absolutely hysterical, but only posts once in awhile…you might be compromising your number of readers.
-Think about the appearance of your blog. Is it pleasing to the eye? Dark backgrounds with light letters can be difficult to read. I used to have that cute black background with white letters because I thought my pictures looked nice with that background. And they did. But the more I read what I wrote the bigger my headache got. Reading white on black, paragraph after paragraph is harsh.
Linky Love
-A link is when you highlight a word and attach a web page to it. The word changes colors and is underlined and when you click on it you get move to the aforementioned website. This is super easy to do and fun too…but I only know how to do it using Blogger. Find the page you want to link to, highlight the URL at the top of that page, right click and choose “copy”. When you are writing your post, click on the “compose” tab in the upper right hand side of the post box. Highlight the word you want to link to the page. There is a box in your toolbar between the “left align” box and the “text color” box. It looks like some kind of outer space satellite. Click on that. Paste in the URL address you copied earlier and wa la. Easy as that. You can change the color of the link to stand out on your page if you like.
The Facts On Stats
-Stats are SOOOO fun to watch. I use statcounter.com. It’s free and it will give you easy step by step directions on how to set up an account. You’ll be asked to set up an account (we do that for everything now right??) and then you’ll need to copy and paste the code they give you onto your blog. You do that by going to your layout page and clicking on “add page element”. Click on the “html/javascript” button and paste the code into that box. Your statcounter will then start keeping track of who visits you, where they are from, and how much time they spend on your site. It’s very exciting, and you can see that although you may not getting very many comments there are plenty of people reading. Not everyone likes to leave comments and that’s ok.
The Truth About Comments
-If you WANT comments you must LEAVE comments. I was a comment leaving junky for the first half of my blogging "career". I considered it a personal challenge to find something to say on each and every blog I surfed, and I met some very lovely people who are still with me to this day.
-75% of the people you leave comments for will come back to see you. Your blog must be worth sticking around for if you want them to keep coming back. Find your niche! When they return the love you must go back and continue to reciprocate. You want them to know you’re not going away and they most of them will return the favor. As you establish relationships with bloggers continue to seek out new blogs and leave comments for them as well.
-My own rule is that I will not visit a blog without commenting…unless I’m eating. I want people to know I love them. But if you're reading for pleasure and do not care if people visit you then disregard. You don't have to leave comments. They are appreciated, but you don't have to bust your balls.
Copyright Corral
-I don’t know anything about copyrighting, only that I don’t currently have one and I’d be pretty pissed off if someone stole my stuff and got rich off of it. I need to look into protecting my things…I’ll let you know when I figure that out. NEXT.
Technorati Technical Support
-I’m just starting to get a grasp on Technorati. Just like Statcounter you’re going to need to register yourself. Then you’ll tell them which blog is yours by “claiming your blog” and “releasing the spiders” (gross I know but that’s what they call them) to go find your blog. You receive a rank number and authorut number. The rank tells you how popular your blog is and if you’re just starting up on that site than your number will be like 4,253,945 or something ridiculous like that. As you continue to blog that number will lower. It’s fun to watch. You will also receive an authority. This is cool because you get a point added any time someone links to your page. That’s why we love linky love so much and ask you guys to link from your page when we have contests. Not only does our authority figure go up, but you’re getting YOU’RE readers to come check out our blog too. We like that. So yeah…basically my contest is just a way to buy myself a higher authority figure and hopefully snag in a couple more readers. Shameless I know. I’m totally outing myself right now.
Feedburner
-My knowledge on feed burners is limited. I believe you can set one up on your page and if people subscribe to it then they get your posts via email as soon as they are published. Is this right? Anyone? Anyone? Afro actually has some things to tell you about a feed burner…I still have some homework to do on that one…I think I might actually have one on my page…does it work?? I don’t know. I don’t have a cute little number in the corner like Afro does so I’m thinking not…
Blogging is extremely addictive. I believe there is a five step on line program to help people like us, but I’m not ready yet. I’ll forward the information when I find it. Right now I’m just hoping that my blog will find it’s order in my life and I’ll be able to balance it with other important things. Like my drug addiction.
Kimmers: I'm definitely dying to know how to get a less generic looking layout. I blog with typepad and all the premade layouts they had to choose from were pretty plain. I'm also wondering, why is it that when you leave comments, there's a little picture of you that shows up with your comment, but when I leave comments its just the little grayed out person where your "B" would be, and no picture?
Mama Kat: Good question. And I don’t know. Typepad is a mystery to me. I don’t know why people use it and I don’t know how it works. To be honest I have a hard time even commenting back to people in typepad because the comments go directly to my email and if someone using typepad commented on my blog I can’t link to them from my email account. I have to go BACK into my blog, find the post, click on the comments, sccrrroooooollll down the list, find the person and THEN click on their page. I’m sorry if you don’t see me around too often over there!!
All of you should be receiving your comments in your email account by the way. To do that just go to the “customize” section of your Blogger account. Click on “comments” and scroll ALL the way to the bottom where it says “Comment Notification Email”. Type in the address you want the comments sent to and you’re all set.
As far as your page goes, plain is NOT bad. Sometimes simpler is better. You don’t want to overwhelm your readers. BUT…if you want a fancier page you might consider paying for a custom one. You’ll feel so pretty and professional looking if you get a makeover. I think there is a way to do it yourself, but I never took the time to figure that out. I’m sure there are a lot of codes involved and cutting and pasting, but they’re FREE and that might be worth looking into. If you want to consider paying for a fancy page visit Stephanie and Staci at Blogalicious Designs or Shannon at 8Crazy Designs . For a free alternative try LeeLou Blogs.
Nichole: I would love to know why I can't get the SITS and other buttons to work into my page. I've done exactly what the instructions say but with no success.
Mama Kat: To put the SITS button and other buttons onto your sidebar you’ll need to follow the exact same instructions you followed for the statcounter I mentioned above. Just copy and paste the code into an html/java element in your layout section.

I am here, may I have two Mimosas instead of one?
I am impressed, you have so much information to share! Look how prepared you are on short notice, what ... the other people needed like a year of prep time?
Nice work MIL ;)
Can I ask questions now, or do I gotta wait until after 9? Was I not suppose to ask that at this time?
Super cool writer! Carrie sent me.
You totally rule! I can LINK NOW!! How TOTALLY exciting is that?
My check is in the mail. Please do not cash it until the Friday after next when my crack sales go through the roof and I am able to make a deposit.
If you could hold a plain bagel with cream cheese aside for me it would be much appreciated.
And I can't wait for Spin the Bottle at 1:30. I usually save my drinking for after the children go to bed...but I think today we can make an acception to the rule :)
Look at you, MLI ... you have already provided a blog-altering experience for Crazy Momma!
What great info MLI! I wish I knew some new bloggers to share this with because this is so informative (I know you will have this in your archive so I will be able to give you linky love). Oh and the schedule for the day is jam-packed but I look forward to the fun. BlogHer Smager - I am glad to be here with you!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It is so helpful, I am off right now to do the spider thing. I will be back to read more. It is so very helpful for a freshman blogger like moi! xoox, B
woo-hoo! I love conferences. I was up in the night last night and did the longest post EVER on the topic of tracking readers and being amazed at what people google to get to my blog. "sick of my groucy husband" was my favorite. I use google analytics. :)
Wow, thanks so much. Very helpful.
For copyrighting head over to http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/ and you can decide how much you want to copyright. It is free. Run don't walk.
I've learned so much even before my first cup of coffee. I've been to many conferences (not blogging) and you are gifted for being able to keep me awake and not trying to sneak out the back door this early!!
Thanks for all the great tips! I've just done the update to send comments to my email. I'll be back to check out the rest of the conference later!
Loving the conference! I'm gonna skip the pole dancing hour but I'll be around otherwise! ;-) Found you through Camp Carrie but I'll definitely be back. I like your blog a lot. I especially liked the post about BadAss. Thanks for hosting us!
Very good tips! I agree with all your advice, but I would like to add that scheduling posts is a GOD SEND for handling blogging addiction and being able to write a post every day. (Cause let's face it, some days you want to go to waste time at Target and not write a brilliant blog post.)
Write a new post, then look for the "Post Options" link at the bottom of the box. Click on it, and you can change the date and time to tomorrow or 5 years from now. It's like a blog crock pot--perfect for lazy writing days. :)
That was quite a comprehensive amount of blogging info! Whew! Good stuff in there though...good stuff.
Thank you so much! I LOVE the tips! I am pretty good with computer stuff and couldn't figure out for ANYTHING how to do the links with someone's name!! Yay! Thanks again!
Wow! You're totally awesome!
I am still working on getting my family (DH) to accept my new blogging habit. I am also waiting for my work to catch on and fire me.
But then I'll have more time to blog, right?
Keep the tips coming for us newbies!
What can I say? YOu're just awesome! Thanks for this!
Wait, wait...why'd it stop before we hit the martinis? What's a conference without some alcohol?
That's some pretty handy advice on blogging. And I love the set up!
I'll just add that new bloggers shouldn't think that if you aren't getting comments, no one is reading. My stats are waaay higher than the piddly comments I get, which just means I'm not "inspiring" them to leave comments. Hm. What's that about????
Thanks for this, I actually was a little Debbie Downer about not being at BlogHer when I got up this morning.
I am so bleeping confused...
reality...internet...it is all merging. I am here. I want to participate. i am a team player...
I just don't know what to DO!
I loved this post...informative AND funny.....two of my favorite things.
Oh and Carrie I grabbed a badge. God I hope it is the right one. Did I mention I am lame? No? Okay I am LAME.
Thank you so much for Linky Love. I was trying to figure that one out for 2 hours the other day and gave up. You're the best!
Marcy, just run around and take pictures of us enjoying OUR weekend festivities ...
Too....much....estrogen...
Knees...going weak. Must...have beer and bratwurst...STAT!

PS - My wife loves the apron in the contest, but I don't have a story in me that works in lesbianism, epistemology or beige.
Can't beat attending a conference in your pjs and sipping coffee that didn't cost you $8. Glad I finally rolled out of bed and didn't miss the keg stands, martinis and dance lessons. Fill me up please. I'm outta mimosa.
Thank you so much! I have been wondering how to do the link thing and now I do!!! Can you show me how some people cross out a word, or a sentence with this little line ____??? I have seen it done on some other blogs and it think it is a cute way to say somthing, but not really say it!!
I can't wait for the poll dance lessons to start, and Martinis to follow....what a great day!
I love your site. I'm glad I got up in time for the 11:30 feedburner workshop. I am currently having trouble with mine.
I will be sure to come back for the fashion show at 7!
Thanks fot the conference! I'm enjoying it! Hmmm--I haven't heard of Technorati before--must look into that!
Fun post! I was up on most of it but it's fun to know others are thinking the same stuff :) Blogging is such a great outlet .. .
This is good stuff. I am going to link to it on SITS along with the Dear Angie letter.
Great information! I'm still fairly new to blogging and this has helped allot. I'm off to improve apon my blog! :)
I have only been blogging for 2 months also. I am NOT a technology freak, but I do have a webpage outside of blogging. I use blogging for free therapy. The big thing that you left out if Alexa.com click the traffic rank tab at the top and then you can track any website you want. #1 is the best. Cool tips Kat... Now, where is my mimosa..

OOOH, this was good! I don't know why, but I love technical blog posts. I also love meetings at work--go figure. Keep the info. coming!
I can't believe we have to wait until 4pm until martinis! Okay, I am squeezing the fresh limes, preparing to make my delicious key lime martini with the piecrustini rimmer. If anyone wants one before 4pm, sneak around the back and I'll meet you there!
I'm a fairly new blogger, and I can always use good tips.
Now, I'm sneaking around back to meet Molly with the martinis!
What a great Conference...I've never done pole dancing but I'm open to it...some very helpful information for new bloggers!
You're very funny...it was a great read! I love your photo editing when you cut and paste pictures of yourself on other pictures...that's the best!
Great job on this! I think there are many of us out there who could use tips on how to make our blog better. And thanks for the linky love. I heart you... but, you already know that.
I can offer this tidbit on feedburner... It will burn a "feed" within 30 minutes of you posting and send that feed to anyone who is subscribed in a reader.
The reader explanation is in the same post that you linked and I highly recommend it for use when your daily blog reads have become more than what you can keep up with in your head.
The email that it sends out to my subscribers is only sent once a day... usually about 4 a.m. So, if I post at 10 p.m. my email subscribers will not see it until the next morning.
Again, great post. And look it's the weekend and people are actually commenting!!!
Thanks for all of the great info!!! I will need to think of some questions...I know I have them!
ooh ooh ooh! Pick me, pick me! Kayla -- in order to strike out you must be in html tab and before the word or words you want crossed out use "<" del ">" write the words to get crossed out and then "<" /del ">" it also works with "<" strike ">" and "<" /strike ">".
Just remove the spaces and quotation marks. They won't let me post html code in comments.
Sorry to highjack, back to regular scheduled programming.
When I grow up, can I be like you?
Thank you Thank you Thank you!
This is fun!
How fun! I was a little depressed when I found out what BlogHer WAS (yes I'm relatively new to blogging) and that it was in a DRIVEABLE distance away from me. Now I can just save some money and hang out here :O)
Thank you I am some what more confused but on the other hand more informed and educated. I don't know what this is possible.
you officially lost me with this one. i thought someone spammed your blog. what the hell is going on???????
Great feedback you guys!!
I know Afro!! Look at all these people on Saturday. Unbelievable. If you write it, they will come.
Oh Alaina...with a lot of practice...proabably not, BUT you are great just the way you are. ;)
Tiffany WOOPIE! I managed to force my way back on to the SITS site after all!! I love it.
This is cool, thanks for the tutorial.
Oh and if you all have anymore questions I'm taking notes and will try to get some answers up fo ryou by tomorrow!
this is awesome! I dont feel so left out of blogher anymore.
I'm here, please take note.
My question for the day is: Why does everyone in your family appear to have amazing hair?
that was wonderful to learn. Thanks Mama Kat!! I also enjoyed running over to Afro to see what he had to say and well he has some very good advice. Can't wait for the next one!! YAY!! ooo and I came by with a lil bit of wine, but I understood every bit of what u had said. Thanks a lot. Good thing I have had a kid free day today.
Ooooh! You answered my questions! Thank you so much Kat!!
I had no idea it was so hard for people using Blogger to comment on my page... that's frustrating! And probably not a great start for getting a lot of people to comment on my page. :( At least now I can tell myself that's why, if I don't see you in my comments. :)
To be honest I use Typepad because around the time when I decided to start my blog, I really knew next to nothing about the process, and I read a post on amalah.com about setting up your own blog. She reccommended Typepad, and since I'd been reading her for a long time I figured I'd take her advice. In a lot of ways Typepad is great and I love it, it just sucks sometimes because it seems like 99% of the people I read use Blogger, so any time someone does throw a tip out there, it doesn't apply to me.
I would love to design my own page but honestly? It would just keep getting put off and I'm kind of anxious to get it done. Thank you so much for suggesting a few people, I will definitely be in touch with them!
Excellent conference, I'll be checking back obsessively.
Yea! Loved the stuff about linky love, I think I can do it! And, it's almost time for BBQ?!?! Love that BBQ and some Mojito/Margarita? C YA,
Well I came to this conference expecting little more than entertainment and I got INFORMATION. Like a free bonus gift! Most of all this stuff I know already (cuz I am smart like that?)...but still it told me I am doing things correctly...well, I am doing things the way you do them anyway!
I am new to you- and I will be subscribing!!!! Oh and yes your daughter looks just like 'Boo"...
Um. Did Jessica call me a man? Dude. That's not cool. LOL.
Dirty White Boy licked Kandace. I saw him do it. He's also making spit balls and shooting them up at your bathroom ceiling and he's making fun of Pat behind his back.
I love this. I'm so glad I broke into my neighbor's house to hi-jack their computer to come here today!
Thanks for all the blogging info for those of us who stayed home.
May I have another "Hello My Name Is" badge. I'd like to keep one as a souvenir:-)
Great tips!!!!
I want some tips on making money from my blog --- without getting too commercial!!
I am so completly lost by all the 'lingo' it has made me realize I am a complete idiot when it comes to blogging. Thanks Kathy.
Very cool. I've heard of Technorati, but I had no idea what it was or how it worked. And now I'm ranked 421,241. Yay me!
But I really need some help on the feedburner thing. Do I have to set it up on my blog? If so, how? And how can I make it so that other blog posts from blogs I like show up for me to read instead of me having to check each blog every day? I've heard of people referring to their readers but I'm just not tecchy enough!
Great post!
I'm with Baby. I thought I was on the wrong blog. I am so confused.
Dammit Dirty White Boy! Behave yourself!! Don't make me ask Matt with idealcrap.com to escort you out of here because he will. I especially can't have you coming on to the other women here. Don't make me put a leash on you.
Great "ton 'o tips" for us there Kathy. I will be sure to refernce this blog when I have questions.
AFRO totally got called a dude. I read it loud and clear. That was pretty funny!
Baby and Ms. Awesome you guys are SO not with the program right now. Basically (deep breath) Candid Carrie has a new blog called Camp Carrie where she takes her "campers" on daily field trips to other peoples blogs. She planned a field trip to visit MY blog during BlogHer weekend (which I just learned about like a week ago) and we figured I'd give an impromptu lesson on blogging and how to better your blog. So that's what all this is about. It's like playing pretend in an already somewhat pretend world...I can see how it would be confusing if you know nothing of Camp Carrie.
I learned so much on this fieldtrip!
I need to cut and paste you!
thanks,
www.swirlgirlspearls.blogspot.com
Love this post! Funny and informative!
May I suggest a topic for the next seminar? "The Secret to getting the really good ads on your blog" My little generic ads from google are quite sad! I need to move up to the big time!
I think of myself as a computer nerd, but I've learned a few things. Thanks Kathy!
I read your blog often and wish I had a Ms. Awesome so the kids and dogs would leave me alone long enough to comment more.
OH MY GOODNESS!!! THANKS TO YOUR HELP THAT WAS SOOOOOOOOO EASY! LOOK the SITS button/logo is now on my blog. Look out world, I think I've found a new trick. Well...new to me anyway. YEAH! Thanks so much for your class today. YOU ROCK!!! When's the next one?
Okay. I have a question and I think that we share this question because I saw you ask it once on a SITS post... As a person who strives to comment on others blogs, because I like the same in return.
what do you do when you come across a blog that just plain sucks? Do you say hello? Do you click "homepage" and get the f-ck out of there? Especially with the SITS thing. I've found some awesome stuff through them, but I've come across some that I think... feeding their addiction is totally the wrong thing to do...
Is it out of line to "edit" other people's stuff? Such as grammatical and spelling errors?
And I forgot... is it rude of me to comment sometimes with just:
Need. More. Paragraphs. ???
Thanks for the tips. I now know how to link, it was easy once I found out how.
Love the blog, tips have been most helpful. And it is beautiful! I had no idea that this blogging thing would be so addictive. Perhaps a 12 step program is in order... or at least a device to save myself from carpal tunnel..
Wonderful seminar! I'm off to check out this technorati stuff. Thanks!
crap...my pencil broke...does anyone have a sharpener I can borrow...anyone left??
Thanks for all the great tips (peppered with great humor)..really enjoyed it. Not I just have to remember to add you to my bloglines.....
This is fabulous. And I love the bickering between the commenters. Hilarious.
Oooh, look. I just killed 15 minutes at work.
Thanks for sharing. I need to get my addiction under control and start making it work for me. LOL
I had discovered the joys of blogging & getting friendly with so many other bloggers! The info you're sharing here is great stuff!
Great how-to's about blogging! I also have a personal goal of trying to leave a comment on every blog I visit! :) Love the comments!
Oh, I am so excited, you've answered questions that I didn't even think of yet!
I'm going to write out all of the instructions in longhand with my quill pen on parchment and stuff the paper into the computer thing. Maybe then I can do a link!
thank you, thank you!
Thanks for all of the great info!
I'm pretty knew to blogging..i've been blogging for about 2 weeks now. Thanks so much for all the helpful info!
Geesh, all of this info makes me glad I didn't go to BlogHer! This will be enough for a year at least:)
This was the most fun conference I've ever attended. I think I totally missed the stripping lessons when I was napping though. Thanks for the technorati info.. I have it up on my blog, but had NO IDEA how to actually use it!
Thanks! This was very timely for me. I have been mulling over setting up a more "anonymous" blog, and your tutorial was extremely helpful.
(Please don't click on my link until tomorrow -- my latest post is two weeks old! I know, I know; I obviously don't have time as it is . . . )
This is all great information, but I'm just sad you guys missed the truth or dare games.
You are so funny! I love that I'm on the schedule for a fashion show! I wish I had known! ;)
about Linky Love and Technorati...
I wanted to say that when linking, its especially important to spell the blog names 100% correctly. I see a lot of people linking back to me using my "Adiel" or "triplyksis" or spelling my blog name wrong. Unless it is exactly "It's because I think too much" that connection is not made with technorati. I hope that makes sense.
What a great post, love your writing style!!!
Excellent post. Really helpful for the technologically challenged - like me.
Hmmm... Rick rack and polka dots... very classy in a Doris Day sort of way.
Hi! My blog is still little and young, but I found you through blog stalking some of my friends, and this has been one of the most helpful posts I've ever read. Just wanted to say thank you!!
I realize I'm finding this like a whole week later, but whatev. It's still relevant and I have linked to someone's site who explained Google analytical and so now I'm excited to get started!
Belated thanks...
April...present. I am thinking about Statcounter, however I have a happy medium of blog/real life and am afriad that statcounter will ruin me. I fear it, but I want it. DAMN! Thanks for putting this together. Good info!
Quote from you
